Engaged’s Sections
ENGAGED has a wide variety of sections to pitch an article for, such as our Awareness, Focus, and First Strike/Returning Fire columns to name a few. Each one has different formats and topics, so please read below for more information.
Essays
1500-2500 word pieces of analysis that relate to the main subject of an ENGAGED issue.
Features
3000-4000 word pieces of analysis or reporting that frame the main subject of an issue, which should contain evidence of extensive research.
Focus
1000-1500 word analyses of current events, and should be thoughtful, topical, and timely, but not transient.
Awareness
2,000-3,000 word analyses of a growing issue relating to diplomacy, conflict, war, and law enforcement.
First Strike / Return Fire
1000-1500 word articles in which authors take a provocative stance on any issue. After one stance is presented in an issue, authors will have the opportunity to take an opposing stance, following the same guidelines. The Editors will select an article for First Strike & Returning Fire on the basis of content and how well an author argues their position.
Op-Eds
750-1000 word opinionated pieces by guest authors on a topic of their choosing.
Letters to the Editor
Short responses to the Editors of ENGAGED about issues of concern from any reader. These should be no more than 500-750 words and may be edited for space and style if selected for publishing.
